I see her and I only wish she could see what I do- her beauty, her strength, her sheer amazingness. In many ways she is a mirror image of me. Yet, in the very next moment, I often find myself standing in front of my own mirror, critiquing every inch, every perceived flaw. The contradiction is stark and jarring. How can I teach her to see the beauty that I so readily see in her, if I fail to recognize it in myself?
This profound contradiction became all too real when she came home one day, talking about calories and fat, echoing the lunchtime conversations of 4th grade girls. The realization hit me hard: she was already getting the messages I was trying to avoid. It was time for me to control the narrative and teach her differently. The way I view myself doesn't just affect me; it shapes her understanding of beauty and self-worth.
